Nigeria Reaches 9M Families With Anti-Poverty Cash Program

Nigeria is proving that direct cash support can transform millions of lives at once, with a national program now reaching over 9 million vulnerable families across the country.

The Household Prosperity and Empowerment Cash Transfer Programme, launched in December 2023, aims to reach 15 million households with regular cash payments. The Federal Government announced this week that 9.2 million beneficiaries have already received their first payment, with millions more getting second and third installments.

The program goes beyond simple monthly transfers. About 3.6 million families are receiving special uplift grants of N50,000 (approximately $75 USD) to help ease immediate economic pressures and improve living conditions.

Dr. Bernard Doro, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, shared the numbers at a press briefing in Abuja. Over 9 million households received the first payment, 7.2 million got their second, and 6.5 million have now received three rounds of support.

Minister of Information Mohammed Idris emphasized that the program represents more than statistics. "The HoPE-CT programme is about restoring hope, expanding opportunities, and laying the foundation for inclusive prosperity," he said.

The initiative is part of a broader restructured National Social Investment Programme. This includes interest-free loans of N300,000 to N400,000 for youths and women through cooperatives, requiring no collateral. A revamped N-Power scheme provides additional support.

When millions of families receive reliable cash support, entire communities benefit. Money flows into local markets as families buy food, pay for healthcare, and send children to school. Small businesses see more customers. Economic activity spreads outward like waves from a stone dropped in water.

The program demonstrates how governments can respond directly to citizen needs, especially in challenging economic times. By focusing on the most vulnerable households, Nigeria is building a foundation for wider prosperity that reaches the grassroots level.

Officials urged media to share real stories of beneficiaries, showing how the payments restore dignity and strengthen resilience in everyday Nigerian families.

With 15 million households as the final goal, the program aims to touch roughly 75 million individuals when complete, representing a significant portion of Nigeria's population getting direct government support to build better lives.
