Nigeria Signs Deal to Bring Prisoners Home From Ethiopia

Dozens of Nigerian prisoners in Ethiopia erupted in celebration after learning they could soon complete their sentences back home. The prisoner transfer agreement between Nigeria and Ethiopia means inmates can finish serving time near their families instead of thousands of miles away.

The deal was finalized at AbaSamuel Prison in Addis Ababa, where Nigerian inmates welcomed the news with overwhelming relief. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Ojukwu described the scene as "absolutely electric" with prisoners expressing joy at the prospect of returning home.

The agreement allows eligible Nigerian prisoners in Ethiopia to transfer back to Nigeria to complete their custodial sentences. Similarly, Ethiopian prisoners in Nigeria can return home under the same terms.

For incarcerated people, distance from family creates deep hardship. Loved ones struggle to visit across international borders. Phone calls become expensive and rare. The emotional toll of isolation compounds the punishment of imprisonment itself.

The transfer process will include eligibility reviews to determine which prisoners qualify under the agreement terms. Both governments will coordinate the logistics of repatriation while ensuring sentences are properly served.
