Nigeria Works to Bring 30 Prisoners Home from Tanzania

More than 30 Nigerians currently serving jail terms in Tanzania may soon get the chance to complete their sentences back home, thanks to diplomatic efforts between the two nations.

Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced it will pursue a prisoner transfer agreement with Tanzania. The country's newly appointed High Commissioner will raise the matter with Tanzanian authorities after officially presenting her credentials.

Spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa explained that Nigeria currently has no legal framework to bring convicted citizens home from Tanzania. A prisoner transfer agreement would change that, allowing people to serve their remaining time in Nigerian facilities near their families.

"The prisoner transfer agreement is something that has to be mutually agreed," Ebienfa said. If both countries reach terms on implementation, they'll work toward helping sentenced Nigerians complete their time at home.

The Nigerians detained in Tanzania fall into three categories: those already convicted and serving sentences, people awaiting trial, and individuals arrested on immigration or drug charges. The government is tracking all three groups as it works on the broader agreement.

Prisoner transfer agreements represent a humanitarian approach to justice, recognizing that serving time near family can support rehabilitation. They also ease the burden on families who struggle to maintain contact across international borders.
