Nigeria Upgrades Sports Facilities for Regional Games
Nigeria's Niger Delta Development Commission is transforming sports venues in Benin City ahead of a major regional competition. Over 3,000 athletes will compete in upgraded facilities this February.
When Benin City agreed to host the 2nd Niger Delta Games, organizers made a promise: leave the city's sports facilities better than they found them.
Now those promises are becoming reality. The Niger Delta Development Commission has completed major upgrades to multiple sporting venues across Edo State, just weeks before 3,000 athletes arrive for competition.
The transformation includes a complete renovation of the Olympic-standard swimming pool at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. The 50-meter pool, reaching 20 feet deep, now meets international competition standards.
Tennis courts beside the main arena received similar attention. At the Wire Road Sports Centre, crews added new dressing rooms and facilities to the volleyball and basketball courts.
"It is a legacy that the games bring to host states," said Itiako Ikpokpo, chairman of Dunamis-Icon Limited, the organizing company. His team conducted detailed assessments of each venue to identify needed improvements.

The upgrade approach mirrors what happened in Uyo during the first Games edition. That city also received lasting infrastructure improvements that athletes and residents continue using today.
Nine states across Nigeria's Niger Delta region will send teams to compete. Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo, and Rivers States are all participating.
More than 500 coaches will accompany the athletes across 16 different sports. The week-long competition runs from February 20 to 27 in the newly upgraded facilities.
The Ripple Effect
These renovations reach far beyond one week of competition. Local athletes who train at these facilities year-round now have access to international-standard equipment and venues.
The upgrades also position Benin City to host future regional and potentially international competitions. Better facilities attract bigger events, which bring economic benefits and tourism to the region.
Young athletes throughout the Niger Delta now have proof that investing in sports infrastructure creates opportunities. The pattern of upgrading facilities in each host city ensures multiple communities benefit over time.
Benin City is ready to welcome the Niger Delta's best athletes to world-class venues.
