Nigerian App Helps Moms Save for Safer Childbirth

Nigeria loses one woman every seven minutes to pregnancy complications, many because families cannot afford upfront hospital payments. When Kemi Olakunle heard about two pregnant women who died waiting for treatment they couldn't pay for in 2025, she knew her work had found its purpose.

Olakunle left medical school to solve a problem she witnessed firsthand during her service year. Patients delayed critical treatment for weeks, sometimes dying, simply because they lacked money upfront. She asked herself: what if families could save for healthcare the same way Nigerians traditionally save for school fees and homes?

That question led to Health4Moni, a pilot program in Ibadan's Bodija Market where field agents collected small weekly health savings from over 1,000 traders. The program revealed shocking levels of untreated illness. Between 40% and 50% of participants had undiagnosed hypertension or diabetes.

But the turning point came when a pregnant woman asked to join so she could afford her delivery. Olakunle had to turn her away because the program didn't cover maternal care. That conversation changed everything.

Unlike chronic illnesses, pregnancy gives families roughly nine months of advance notice. Olakunle realized this window could become an opportunity for women to prepare financially, saving small amounts over time instead of scrambling for large payments during emergencies.

In December 2025, she launched PreggiCare through her company HealthVest. The web app lets women deposit whatever they can afford, from 15 cents to 73 cents at a time, into a digital wallet earning 10% annual interest. The money goes toward antenatal care, delivery, and emergencies at partner hospitals offering discounted rates.

The Ripple Effect

Nigeria accounts for 29% of global maternal deaths, largely because families must pay out of pocket before treatment begins. By giving women months to save gradually, PreggiCare transforms pregnancy from a financial crisis into a planning opportunity.

The model builds on informal savings traditions Nigerians already trust. Ajo groups and community contribution schemes have funded countless life milestones. Now those same principles are protecting mothers and babies during the most vulnerable moments.

When affordable care becomes accessible, women don't have to choose between treatment and bankruptcy, and families don't lose mothers to preventable complications.
