Nigerian Army Rescues Day-Old Baby From Trafficking Ring

Nigerian Army troops working with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) saved a day-old baby boy from being sold and arrested seven suspected traffickers in Cross River State. The rescue happened Wednesday during a raid on Glorious Amazing Grace Hospital in Calabar.

Acting on detailed intelligence about a child trafficking syndicate, troops from the 13 Brigade headquarters conducted a coordinated operation. They caught the suspects in the middle of negotiations to sell the newborn for N3 million (approximately $3,500).

The seven suspects range in age from 23 to 54 years old. Six are from Cross River State, and one is from neighboring Akwa Ibom State.

Authorities immediately handed the suspects over to NAPTIP for prosecution. The rescued baby is now in protective care with appropriate authorities.

This successful operation represents more than one child saved. It shows the growing coordination between Nigeria's military and anti-trafficking agencies to protect vulnerable children.

Under Nigerian law, buying or selling persons carries serious consequences. Offenders face a minimum of five years in prison and fines between N1 million and N5 million, with stricter penalties when children are involved.

The Child Rights Act adds another layer of protection. It specifically criminalizes buying, selling, or hiring children in any form, carrying penalties up to five years imprisonment.

NAPTIP serves as Nigeria's lead agency for enforcement and victim support. The organization works alongside military and police forces to identify and dismantle trafficking networks across the country.

The Nigerian Army emphasized its ongoing commitment to fighting human trafficking and child abuse. Officials urged citizens to support these efforts by sharing timely, credible information with security agencies.

This rescue adds to a growing number of recent interventions across Nigeria targeting syndicates that exploit infants and children. Each operation strengthens the network of protection around the country's most vulnerable.

One newborn who should have been welcomed with love instead became the center of a criminal transaction, but today that baby has a chance at a different future.
