Nigerian Army Rescues Kidnap Victim, Recovers Ransom

Nigerian Army troops rescued a kidnapping victim and broke up a criminal gang in Imo State, bringing someone home safe and showing that coordinated security efforts are working.

On July 17, soldiers from the 34 Artillery Brigade raided a hideout in Obinwanne Umuaka, a town in Njaba Local Government Area. The operation freed the victim and arrested a suspected member of the kidnapping syndicate.

Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, spokesperson for the 82 Division, shared details of the mission on Sunday. Troops recovered a bag used to collect ransom payments, abandoned in nearby bushes after the criminals had split the money.

The team also found a black Lexus sedan that the kidnappers allegedly used during the abduction. Inside and around the hideout, soldiers discovered mobile phones, identity documents, and 298,200 naira in cash believed to be part of the ransom payment.

The freed victim confirmed that the arrested suspect played a role in the kidnapping. Initial findings revealed the suspect had provided his own vehicle to help the gang's leader and received a share of the ransom money in return.

The Nigerian Army handed over all evidence and the suspect to the State Security Service, which will continue investigating and tracking down other gang members who fled. This kind of collaboration between military and intelligence agencies strengthens the entire security network.
