Nigerian Army Wins Africa's Top Counter-Terrorism Award

The Nigerian Army received Africa's highest honor for counter-terrorism work, earning recognition as the continent's most effective fighting force against violent extremism in 2025.

African Security Watch presented the award to Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu at Army Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday. The organization evaluates military forces across the continent based on operational success, intelligence work, and community partnerships.

The Nigerian Army stood out for its coordinated operations that have significantly weakened terrorist networks throughout the region. Their intelligence-led campaigns and strong cooperation with civilian communities have helped restore safety to areas once gripped by violence.

Major General Teriworie Gagariga brought the award back from the ceremony in Banjul, The Gambia, where evaluators praised Nigeria's approach to building local capacity and training forces to respond to evolving threats.

General Shaibu dedicated the honor to soldiers who have given their lives protecting their country and communities. He described it as validation of the courage and professionalism shown by personnel serving in challenging conditions across Nigeria.
