Nigerian Athletes Get Jobs After Commonwealth Games Wins

When Edidiong Umofia, Ruth Nyong, and Enku Ekuta returned from the Commonwealth Games in Scotland with medals around their necks, they brought home more than just hardware.

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State offered all three athletes immediate employment at the Ministry of Sports Development on Friday. Umofia won gold in weightlifting, Nyong took silver in weightlifting, and Ekuta earned bronze in judo.

The timing couldn't be better. The announcement came as the governor received the Unity Torch to kick off the 2026 Akwa Ibom Sports Festival in Uyo, the state capital.

Governor Eno made clear that the job offers aren't just about rewarding past success. He wants to motivate the athletes to achieve even more while building careers in the sports industry he calls "a multi-billion-dollar opportunity."

The jobs represent a major shift in how Nigerian states support their athletes. Too often, medal winners return home to fanfare that quickly fades, leaving them without sustainable income or career paths.

The Ripple Effect

Akwa Ibom's investment in grassroots sports is already producing remarkable results. At the recent Niger Delta Games in Benin City, the state dominated with 16 gold, 17 silver, and 22 bronze medals.

The annual sports festival launched just last year as part of the governor's ARISE Agenda for youth development. That first edition discovered talented athletes who went on to represent Nigeria internationally in judo, wrestling, athletics, and weightlifting.

Making history at the Commonwealth Games holds special significance. Akwa Ibom provided three athletes to Nigeria's contingent, and all three came home with medals, a perfect success rate that's nearly unheard of.

Sports Commissioner Paul Bassey thanked the governor for what he called "remarkable investment in sports and youth development." The state continues building its reputation as a talent pipeline for Nigerian sports.

The second annual sports festival is now underway, promising to uncover the next generation of champions who might follow in the footsteps of Umofia, Nyong, and Ekuta.

Three athletes proved their excellence on the world stage, and now they have the stability to keep dreaming bigger.
