Nigerian Filmmaker Honors Late Actor in New Documentary

Nigerian filmmaker Tunde Kelani announced this week that his documentary series will dedicate an entire episode to the late Gabriel Kola Oyewo, a beloved actor, scholar, and cultural icon who spent his life preserving Nigerian narratives through theatre and film.

The episode will air as part of Mainframe Productions' Film Heritage Digital series. It features an interview Kelani recorded with Oyewo three years ago during the production of "Heroes of the Yoruba Travelling Theatre."

"Sometimes before we continue telling stories, we must first honour the people who made those stories possible," Kelani wrote in his announcement on Instagram.

The two artists shared a decades-long creative partnership. Oyewo appeared in several of Kelani's most important films, including "Koseegbe," "O Le Ku," and "Saworoide." Each performance helped preserve Yoruba cultural stories for future generations.

Oyewo wasn't just an actor. He dedicated his career to teaching theatre at Nigerian universities, blending performance with education and research. His work bridged the gap between traditional Yoruba travelling theatre and modern Nigerian cinema.
