Indian Parish Revives Traditional Games to Unite Generations

When Father Aldrin D'Costa noticed parishioners glued to their phones instead of playing together outdoors, he had an idea that would change his community forever.

The priest launched FREEDOM in 2023, an annual event designed to revive traditional Goan games and neighborhood gatherings that were disappearing from parish life. Now in its fourth year, the celebration has become a beloved tradition in Tilamola Parish, bringing hundreds together each August.

The event features games like Logorio, Godd'ddeamni, and Talleamni, traditional activities many younger parishioners had never heard of. Older community members teach the rules while younger generations jump in to play, creating natural connections across age groups that rarely interact otherwise.

This year's celebration on August 15 coincided with India's Independence Day, adding special meaning to the gathering. Bishop Simião Fernandes attended and challenged participants to free themselves from attitudes that divide communities, including hatred, jealousy, and dishonesty.

"You are our future," Bishop Fernandes told the parish youth, encouraging them to take active roles in preserving community unity. The day included singing, cooking, cultural activities, and a theme song composed by the parish priests themselves.

The Ripple Effect

The impact has spread beyond just fun and games. Parishioner Fatima Nogueira says the event has strengthened community bonds and encouraged greater participation in all parish activities throughout the year.

The revival of traditional games has also promoted physical activity in an area where sedentary screen time had become the norm. Stanley Oliveira notes that younger parishioners now play these games with the same enthusiasm their grandparents once did.

What began as one priest's concern about declining community connection has transformed into a movement that honors heritage while building new memories. Father D'Costa and his team of assistant priests now work alongside parish youth to organize the annual celebration, ensuring the next generation takes ownership of their traditions.

The success of FREEDOM shows what's possible when communities intentionally create space for togetherness. In a world increasingly dominated by digital isolation, this small parish in South Goa is proving that simple games and shared meals still have the power to unite people across generations.
