Nigerian Governor Approves Campus Fence to Boost Safety

Students at a Nigerian university can finally breathe easier thanks to a governor who listened to their long-standing plea for better campus security.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State approved immediate construction of a perimeter fence around Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT). The project broke ground Tuesday, marking the end of years of requests from students worried about unauthorized access to their campus.

Vice Chancellor Professor Aloysius Okolie praised the timing of the intervention. He emphasized that the fence isn't meant to isolate the university from surrounding communities, but rather to protect lives, property, and infrastructure investments.

Student Union President Chizaram Nwodo expressed relief that the administration had finally addressed their safety concerns. She noted the fence would significantly reduce unauthorized entries while creating a more secure learning environment for thousands of students.

The university has maintained strong ties with neighboring Amurri and Umueze Awkunanaw communities through local hiring and student admissions. Community leaders Victor Okechukwu and Okwudiri Ohaa both thanked the governor for prioritizing the university's development while pledging continued support for campus projects.

The fence is just one piece of ESUT's broader transformation. The university has already committed one billion naira toward two modern dormitories that will house 1,600 students, split equally between male and female residents.

Construction is also advancing on a new Faculty of Social Sciences building and a university printing press. Both facilities are nearing completion as part of Governor Mbah's vision to position ESUT as a leading hub for science, technology, and innovation.
