Nigerian Medical Students Don White Coats in Milestone Event

Medical students at Nigeria's Federal University of Health Sciences took a meaningful step toward their future careers as they donned white coats for the first time during a special ceremony in Ila-Orangun, Osun State.

The White Coat Ceremony welcomed Part IV medical students into clinical training after they completed pre-clinical studies and passed their first professional examination. From this point forward, these students will work directly with patients in wards, clinics, and operating rooms.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Akeem Olawale Lasisi told students the ceremony represents more than an academic milestone. It signals their readiness to take on real responsibilities caring for people during vulnerable moments in their lives.

Before receiving their coats, students completed a week-long preceptorship program designed to prepare them for the shift from textbooks to bedside medicine. The program covered clinical ethics, patient care approaches, professional conduct, and the many career paths available in medicine.

Guest speaker Prof. Augustine Adeolu, a neurosurgeon from the University of Ibadan, encouraged students to see medicine as a calling rather than just a job. He reminded them that the best doctors stand out not only for their technical skills but for their genuine care for patients.

"Medicine is about human beings. It is about compassion, empathy and service," Adeolu told the students. He stressed that success in their field requires continuous learning, strong relationships with colleagues, and emotional resilience alongside intellectual growth.
