Nigerian Para-Athlete Breaks World Record at Glasgow 2026

Standing in the discus ring at Glasgow's Scotstoun Stadium, Goodness Nwachukwu looked up and prayed for help before her final throw of the night.

The reigning Commonwealth champion needed something special. Two no-throws at the start had left the Nigerian para-athlete wondering if she'd even win a medal this time around.

A safety throw in round three brought relief as she moved into third place. By round four, she'd taken the lead with 33.12 meters, but the 27-year-old knew she had more to give.

"I was like, 'ah, what is happening Goodness? Even your warm-up throw was better,'" she recalled in an exclusive interview with Olympics.com. She told herself to calm down and trust her training.

Her sixth and final throw sent the discus soaring 39.66 meters. The mark shattered her own world record in the F42 classification and secured her second consecutive Commonwealth gold.

"The emotion was too high for me, more than the last edition," Nwachukwu said. She dedicated her victory to her father, who recently passed away, and to her mother who had been praying for her success.

Why This Inspires

Nwachukwu's journey to the top didn't happen overnight. She wakes at 4am to beat traffic on her hour-long commute to training, and has struggled with limited financial support throughout her career.

"I have fallen many times while training," she told Commonwealth Sport earlier this year. Yet she keeps showing up because para athletics taught her something powerful.

"It made me know that there is an ability in disability, that I should not relent," she explained. Competing alongside able-bodied athletes at the Commonwealth Games reinforces that message of unity for her.

"It shows that togetherness. We are all one and we are the same."

The same, and yet different in her own record-breaking way. Only one athlete has broken her own world record to win gold at back-to-back Commonwealth Games editions, proving that determination and faith can turn near-disaster into triumph.
