Nigerian Police Free 9 Kidnapped Church Worshippers

Nine people kidnapped from their church during a prayer vigil in Benue State, Nigeria, are finally home with their families after police freed them without paying ransom.

Gunmen had stormed St John's Catholic Church in Ojije around 2 a.m. during a 30-day vigil, taking nine worshippers hostage. The kidnappers initially demanded 100 million naira (about $65,000 USD) before reducing it to 30 million naira during negotiations with families.

But police had other plans. Acting on intelligence, officers from the Ado Division arrested two suspects, Abubakar Jibril and Ashiru Ibrahim, on February 11. They found five rounds of ammunition on the suspects and immediately handed them to a specialized investigation team.

Three days later, police raided a hideout linked to one of the arrested men. The operation netted an AK-47 rifle, eight more rounds of ammunition, and two additional suspects identified as key members of the kidnapping network.

Police spokesperson Udeme Edet said sustained search operations across multiple communities put enough pressure on the group that they released all nine victims unharmed. No ransom was paid.

The arrests established clear links between the suspects and the church abduction. Investigations continue as police work to arrest other network members still at large.

This rescue represents a different approach to kidnapping cases that often end with families paying devastating ransoms. By combining intelligence work, coordinated operations across security agencies, and sustained pressure on criminal hideouts, Nigerian police demonstrated that swift action can bring victims home safely.

The national police chief approved additional resources for Benue State, including air surveillance units and tactical teams to strengthen security operations. These deployments aim to prevent future attacks and catch remaining suspects before they can target other communities.

While recent weeks have seen troubling attacks on markets and highways in the region, this successful operation offers hope that improved coordination and intelligence work can turn the tide against criminal networks terrorizing rural communities.

All nine worshippers returned home to their families unharmed, and four dangerous suspects face justice.
