Nigerian Schools Win $10K+ Grants for Academic Excellence

Three Nigerian secondary schools are celebrating life-changing grants after proving that academic excellence opens doors to opportunity.

Mountain Crest High School in Imo State took top honors at the 2026 PEARLS Quiz and STEAM Competition, winning a $10,000 development grant for their school. Each of the three student representatives received $200 scholarships, while their teacher went home with a brand new laptop.

The competition, organized by energy companies NNPC and Seplat Energy, brought together the brightest young minds from across the state. Students faced questions demanding more than memorized facts. They needed to think critically, solve problems on the spot, and apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges.

Second place went to Owerri City Secondary School, earning a $6,000 grant and $150 scholarships for each student. Eziachi Secondary School in Orlu claimed third, receiving $2,000 for school improvements and $100 per student.

Chioma Afe, Director of External Affairs at Seplat Energy, explained why the company invests heavily in education. "We discovered through years of research that one of the critical needs within our communities is education," she said. The program aims to encourage discipline, academic rigor, and sharper thinking among students who will shape Nigeria's future.

Governor Hope Uzodinma praised the initiative through his Commissioner for Petroleum Resources, noting this marked the third consecutive year of the competition. He highlighted how the same partnership extends beyond classrooms, building an infectious disease hospital described as one of the largest in southeastern Nigeria and running eye care programs for underserved communities.

The Ripple Effect

This single quiz competition creates waves of opportunity far beyond the winners. The school grants fund better libraries, science labs, and learning spaces that benefit hundreds of students for years to come. Teachers receive training and technology, strengthening entire educational communities. Most importantly, students across Imo State now have proof that excellence gets rewarded, motivating the next generation to study harder and dream bigger.

The program complements other regional initiatives, including the Seplat Teachers Empowerment Programme, creating a comprehensive support system for education. When companies invest in young minds rather than quick fixes, communities gain the tools to solve their own challenges.
