Nigerian Town Donates Land for AI Academy

Traditional leaders in Omuo-Ekiti, Nigeria, just made a bold pledge that could transform education in their region. They've promised to donate a large plot of land for a proposed Artificial Intelligence Academy that would bring world-class tech training to a rural community.

The commitment came during a public hearing on Thursday for a bill that would establish the academy in Ekiti State. Senator Yemi Adaramodu is championing the proposal, which aims to equip young Nigerians with AI skills that are increasingly vital in the global economy.

King Noah Omonigbehin, the paramount ruler of Omuo-Ekiti, told lawmakers the community is ready and excited to host the institution. Speaking through his representative, he emphasized how the academy would give youth across Nigeria access to technology education that matches international standards.

Professor Olusola Kolawole, a former medical school dean and community leader, highlighted why Omuo-Ekiti makes sense as a location. The town sits near the borders of four states, making it accessible to students from a wide region of Nigeria.

The professor noted that Ekiti State already has numerous AI professionals eager to contribute to the academy's development. The community has even secured a temporary site while preparing to donate permanent land for the campus.

Beyond education, community leaders believe the academy will spark economic growth and improve security in the region. Jobs would flow into the area during construction and operation, while students and staff would support local businesses.

The proposal also addresses a fairness issue. Omuo-Ekiti has received few federal projects over the years, and local leaders see the academy as a chance to balance development across Nigeria.
