Nigerian Troops Reopen Road Closed for 3 Years
A vital road connecting communities in Nigeria has reopened after three years, allowing thousands of displaced families to return home safely. Military forces cleared explosives and dismantled dangerous facilities that had kept residents away since 2022.
Families separated from their homes for three years can finally return to their communities in Nigeria's Anambra and Imo states after troops successfully reopened a crucial road.
The Lilu–Eketutu Road, which serves as a lifeline for surrounding communities, had been abandoned since 2022 due to security threats. The route enables the flow of people, goods, and essential services for thousands of residents.
Nigerian military forces from multiple agencies joined together in early March to restore access to the area. Teams discovered and safely removed improvised explosive devices that had been planted along the road, preventing potential casualties and making the route accessible again.
Explosive ordnance disposal specialists carefully disconnected the devices during operations on March 6. Their expertise ensured that no one was injured during the clearing process.
In a related operation on March 11, troops conducted additional clearance work in the Orsu–Ihiteukwa area. Despite encountering multiple explosions during their advance, they maintained their mission to secure key routes for returning residents.

The operation led to the discovery of a bomb-making facility in the area. Inside, teams recovered ammunition, weapons components, and materials used for creating explosive devices. The facility has been dismantled.
The Ripple Effect
Reopening this road means more than just restored transportation. Farmers can now bring crops to market, children can access schools, and families can reunite after years of forced separation.
The return of normal life to these communities will support local economies and restore connections between neighbors. Markets that once thrived along this route can resume operations, providing livelihoods for merchants and access to goods for residents.
Security forces continue working across the southeast region to ensure lasting peace and stability. They've requested community cooperation to help identify and address remaining security concerns.
Operation UDOKA remains committed to protecting residents and securing the region so displaced families can rebuild their lives in safety.
