Nigerian University Celebrates 131 First-Class Graduates

A decade of dedication paid off for thousands of students at Federal University Oye Ekiti as 131 graduates walked across the stage with first-class degrees in hand.

The university celebrated its 10th convocation ceremony with 7,396 students earning degrees across all levels. Vice Chancellor Prof. Abayomi Fasina shared the numbers during a press conference Monday: 2,519 students earned Second Class Upper degrees, 3,777 received Second Class Lower, 966 earned Third Class degrees, and three graduated with Pass degrees.

The ceremony's top honor went to Adeniyi Maryam Adedolapo of Medical Science, who achieved an impressive 4.89 CGPA. Her achievement represents the caliber of students now attracted to this rapidly growing institution.

FUOYE has transformed dramatically since opening its doors. The university now ranks fourth most subscribed among Nigerian public universities according to Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board statistics. International recognition followed too, with Times Higher Education placing FUOYE fourth in Nigeria for 2026.

The growth extends beyond rankings. Under Prof. Fasina's five-year tenure, the number of faculties doubled from eight to 18, while academic programs expanded from 73 to 91. The university added five institutes and 19 directorates where previously there were few or none.

Infrastructure kept pace with academic expansion. The Blue Roof Legacy program completed over 160 projects across campuses, creating modern spaces for learning and research. New colleges in Medicine, Computing, Cybersecurity, and Data Science now address critical national needs in healthcare and technology.

The Ripple Effect

The university invested heavily in its greatest asset: people. Through structured training programs, 381 staff members received professional development support. Another 130 academic staff got funding for advanced degrees including PhDs and Master's programs, ensuring future students will learn from highly qualified faculty.

FUOYE also launched innovative programs bringing expertise from beyond campus walls. The Professor of Practice, Diaspora Professors, and Emeritus Professors initiatives connect current students with distinguished professionals, accomplished scholars abroad, and retired academics whose wisdom continues enriching the next generation.

As Prof. Fasina prepares to complete his tenure this month, the numbers tell a story of transformation. What began as a young institution has become a destination for students seeking quality education and a launchpad for graduates ready to contribute to Nigeria's future.
