Nigerian Women Embrace Doulas for Holistic Birth Support
More Nigerian mothers are choosing doulas for emotional and educational support during pregnancy and childbirth. These trained professionals are filling a crucial gap between medical care and personal wellness.
In Nigeria, a quiet revolution in maternal care is helping mothers feel supported, informed, and empowered throughout their pregnancy journey.
Doulas are trained professionals who provide emotional, physical, and educational support before, during, and after childbirth. Unlike doctors or midwives, they don't deliver babies or prescribe medication. Instead, they stay with mothers throughout the entire experience, answering questions, offering reassurance, and helping families prepare for life with a newborn.
Few Nigerians had heard of doulas just a few years ago. Today, expectant mothers are actively seeking their services, and more women are training to join the profession themselves.
Osunlolu Abimbola, a certified labor and postpartum doula and founder of A3 Botanical World, is helping lead this shift. She believes pregnancy is as much an emotional experience as a medical one.
"Women don't just need medical care," Abimbola explained. "They also need someone who can support them emotionally, educate them, advocate for them where necessary and remind them that they are not alone."

Abimbola's approach blends modern doula training with indigenous wellness practices. In 2020, she completed an apprenticeship in medical herbs through Agbagba Herbs Research Centre. Three years later, she earned her Labor and Postpartum Doula Certification from Blooming Lotus Birthing Service, gaining internationally recognized training.
She argues that mothers shouldn't have to choose between conventional medicine and traditional knowledge. When applied responsibly, both approaches can work together to support holistic wellbeing.
Through her digital platforms, Abimbola has built a community of over 300,000 followers across TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram. Her educational videos about motherhood, wellness, and maternal health have generated more than two million engagements, introducing doula care to audiences hearing about it for the first time.
The Ripple Effect
Abimbola's philosophy extends far beyond the delivery room. Through the Welcome Home Retreat, she organizes intimate wellness experiences for just 11 participants at a time. These gatherings combine meditation, herbal wellness, meaningful conversations, and reflection, helping mothers reconnect with themselves after the intense experience of childbirth.
Her message challenges how society thinks about maternal care. Supporting women shouldn't stop when a baby is born. It should continue long afterward, recognizing that a mother's emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing matters just as much as her physical health.
As awareness grows about maternal mental health and personalized childbirth experiences, the doula profession is finding its place in Nigeria's healthcare landscape, creating a more compassionate approach to one of life's most transformative moments.
