Tamil Nadu Engineer's $0.01 Device Saves 3M Mothers

When Senthil Kumar Murugesan watched his sister struggle to get timely pregnancy care, he knew rural mothers needed something better than the broken system failing them. The Samsung and Qualcomm engineer decided to build it himself.

In rural India, only 54% of pregnant women complete the four recommended antenatal checkups. Without regular monitoring, serious complications like high blood pressure or nutritional deficiencies often go unnoticed until it's too late to intervene.

In 2019, Senthil launched JioVio Healthcare with a simple mission: bring hospital-level pregnancy monitoring into women's homes using technology they could actually afford. His solution combines AI prediction with wearable devices and community health workers.

The system identifies high-risk pregnancies during the second trimester, giving doctors valuable time to recommend changes before complications become dangerous. For mothers already identified as high-risk, Senthil created Allowear, a wearable that continuously tracks sleep, pulse, physical activity and calorie burn while sending medication reminders.

Local ASHA health workers collect the data via Bluetooth and upload it to the cloud. Doctors can review each mother's health remotely and intervene quickly when warning signs appear, without waiting for her to travel hours to a clinic.

The entire service costs just one rupee per day, covered by the government. That's roughly one US cent for advanced pregnancy monitoring that would be impossible to access otherwise.

The Ripple Effect

Since 2019, JioVio Healthcare has supported over 3 million mothers across 14,328 villages in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala. The startup's 1,000-day care programme has helped 7,320 high-risk pregnancies with early detection and treatment.

Doctors report catching issues like abnormal blood sugar, blood pressure problems and nutritional gaps much earlier than traditional checkups allow. Timely treatment reduces complications and improves outcomes for both mother and baby.

For women living in remote villages, the difference is transformative. They no longer have to choose between expensive travel to distant hospitals or going without care entirely.

Senthil's innovation proves that combining AI, affordable wearables and community health workers can close gaps that hospitals alone never could. Sometimes the difference between a risky pregnancy and a safe delivery costs less than a cup of tea.
