Nigeria's Abia State Creates Sports Zone for Local Jobs

Nigeria's Abia State is turning its thriving community of leather workers and fashion artisans into a powerhouse for African sports merchandise.

The state government announced advanced plans for a Special Sports Economic Zone designed to create employment while serving markets across Nigeria and the continent. Local craftspeople already known for producing quality shoes and sportswear will manufacture football trainers, gym equipment, and athletic apparel at scale.

Information Commissioner Okey Kanu told reporters the project aims to "unlock the creative ingenuity" of Abia's artisans. The zone will operate through a partnership between Sports Nigeria and the state government, generating tax revenue while providing jobs for unemployed youth.

Abia's investment in sports is already paying off. The state recently won the maiden South-East Open Dance Competition and took first place in the inaugural Teqball League held at Aba Sports Club.

But the state isn't just building facilities. It's building futures.

Through a partnership with Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic in Aba, Abia launched Nigeria's first National Diploma program in sports management. The first class of students just matriculated into the two-year program.

Youth and Sports Commissioner Nwaobilor Ananaba explained the program ensures athletes and sports professionals can thrive after their competitive years end. Graduates can pursue careers as sports therapists, psychologists, managers, and other specialized roles that keep them connected to the field they love.

This initiative does more than create jobs. It validates the skills Abia's artisans have honed for years, elevating local craftsmanship to continental importance.

The economic zone recognizes that the same hands making shoes sold across Nigeria can supply sporting goods for an entire continent. It transforms informal sector workers into formal economy contributors with steady income and growth opportunities.

Meanwhile, the sports management program solves a common tragedy: talented athletes with nowhere to go after retirement. By integrating education with athletic development, Abia ensures its sports stars can become the next generation of coaches, therapists, and industry leaders.
