Air Peace aircraft on runway at Gateway International Airport in Ogun State, Nigeria

Nigeria's Air Peace Launches London Flights This Summer

🤯 Mind Blown

Nigeria's largest airline will connect a new world-class airport in Ogun State to London starting this summer, opening fresh international travel options for West Africans. The move marks a milestone for the region's growing aviation sector.

Air Peace, Nigeria's biggest airline, will start flying passengers from Gateway International Airport to London this summer, giving travelers in Ogun State direct access to Europe's busiest city.

The airline's CEO Allen Onyema announced the plan after touring the newly commissioned airport with Governor Dapo Abiodun. He praised the facility as one of the best-equipped airports in Sub-Saharan Africa and said Air Peace couldn't let such a promising resource sit idle.

The airline will serve both London Gatwick and Heathrow airports using its Boeing 777 aircraft. Onyema highlighted the airport's impressive 4-kilometer runway, long enough to handle even massive Airbus A380 planes, though Air Peace plans to deploy its existing wide-body fleet.

The Gateway International Airport already has cargo operations up and running. Allied Air has begun freight services, and Ethiopian Airlines is expected to start soon, with another European carrier also preparing to launch.

Governor Abiodun shared ambitious plans to turn the airport into much more than a travel hub. A 550-room five-star hotel and an international conference center are in the works, designed to attract global business and tourism to the state.

The governor also announced Gateway Airlines, a new carrier that has already purchased two Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft. These 90-seat planes will connect Ogun State to Abuja and other major Nigerian cities, improving domestic travel options.

The Ripple Effect

The airport's launch creates opportunities far beyond convenient flights. With approximately 50 cargo flights expected between April and year's end, the facility opens new trade routes for Nigerian businesses to reach global markets.

Local jobs will multiply as hotels, conference facilities, and airline operations expand. Small businesses near the airport stand to benefit from increased foot traffic and international visitors discovering what Ogun State offers.

Governor Abiodun believes Gateway International could soon become Nigeria's third-busiest airport after Lagos and Abuja. That kind of growth means more connections, more opportunities, and more reasons for the world to pay attention to this corner of West Africa.

Nigeria's aviation sector is spreading its wings, and this summer's London flights are just the beginning.
