Nigeria's iconic Calabar Carnival is opening its doors to the world with a digital makeover that turns spectators into active participants.

The Cross River State Government announced this week that the 2024 carnival will feature online voting and digital streaming for the first time. Fans across Africa can now register as official members of carnival bands, similar to how football supporters join their favorite premiership clubs.

Gabe Onah, chairman of the Carnival Calabar Commission, revealed the changes at the 22nd Akwaaba African Travel Market in Lagos. The new system gives the public a direct say in crowning the winning band, working alongside traditional judging by professional adjudicators.

"We now want the public to have a say, like the Big Brother framework," Onah explained. The move transforms the carnival from a beautiful spectacle into an interactive competition where every fan's vote counts.

The commission is gamifying the entire experience, including side competitions and carnival-related events. This digital pivot isn't just about engagement, though. It's a sustainable revenue strategy that could reshape how African cultural festivals fund themselves.

Onah emphasized the need for diverse funding streams beyond government budgets. Crowdfunding and private sector partnerships will help ensure the carnival's future, allowing it to grow without sacrificing its cultural roots.

The innovation comes as the carnival community mourns Ojoi Ekpenyong, managing director of the Cross River State Tourism Bureau, who passed in June.
