Nigeria's Cassava Farms Pass Quality Standards Inspection

Nigerian cassava farmers are proving that African agriculture can meet world-class standards, thanks to a partnership between local growers and international supporters.

Nigeria's Standards Organisation inspected two cassava processing centers in Enugu State this week and found impressive results. The facilities at Ako Nike and Umueze Umaga Ezimo-Agu showed strong compliance with hygiene and manufacturing practices that keep food safe for consumers.

"We really appreciate the efforts of IFAD-VCDP in these projects," said Rita Frank-Makwe, Assistant Chief Standards Officer. The International Fund for Agricultural Development has been working with Nigerian farmers for over three years to build modern processing centers from the ground up.

The program provides more than just buildings. IFAD-VCDP installs water systems and solar power, helping farmers spend less while earning more profit. Farmers contribute about 10 percent of costs, mainly by providing land for the centers.

Peter Ameh, the state coordinator for the Standards Organisation, emphasized that his agency wants to help, not punish. "We are not here to take anybody to prison or fight anyone," he explained. "We are here to ensure that our country is safe from substandard products."

The inspectors noted room for improvement in areas like product labeling. Full laboratory testing still needs to happen before final certification. But the strong foundation impressed officials who see potential for more farms to reach the same level.

The Ripple Effect

This partnership shows how targeted support creates lasting change. When international organizations provide infrastructure and training, local farmers gain the tools to compete globally. Quality standards protect consumers while opening export opportunities for producers.

Governor Peter Mbah's administration has backed the program throughout Enugu State. Multiple processing centers now operate across the region, with plans to certify each one through national and international agencies.

Farmer Chijioke Ogbonna welcomed the feedback and promised improvements. His willingness to meet higher standards reflects a broader shift in Nigerian agriculture toward quality and professionalism.

The cassava industry matters deeply to Nigeria's economy and food security. These processing centers transform a staple crop into products that meet the expectations of both local markets and international buyers.

Edward Isiwu, the state coordinator for IFAD-VCDP, sees the inspections as proof that investment in small farmers pays off. When given proper facilities and training, Nigerian agricultural workers can match production standards anywhere in the world.
