Nigeria's Enugu State Launches AI Institute and Tech Hub

Nigeria just took a major step toward becoming Africa's artificial intelligence powerhouse, and it's happening in Enugu State.

The Nigerian Communications Commission signed over its Digital Industrial Park and Learning Centre to Enugu State on Tuesday for 15 years. The facilities will become the Enugu Talent City and AI Institute, creating a new hub for tech training, startup incubation, and digital services.

Governor Peter Mbah has big plans for the space. Working with teams from Qatar, Enugu is racing to make the facility a continental certification center for AI training. The state is betting that artificial intelligence, projected to add $20 trillion to the global economy by 2030, represents an opportunity too big to miss.

The vision goes beyond just buildings and computers. Dr. Aminu Maida, CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission, emphasized that innovation comes from people, not infrastructure alone. The facilities will offer young Nigerians digital skills training, help entrepreneurs turn ideas into businesses, and connect local companies to international opportunities.

Governor Mbah's approach centers on a key idea: Nigeria's brightest minds shouldn't have to leave the country to succeed. "We believe that they should export their talents outside the country from here," he said. Instead of losing workers to foreign offices, Enugu wants to create a place where tech professionals can serve global clients while staying home.

The move aligns with President Bola Tinubu's push to grow Nigeria into a $1 trillion economy. That ambitious goal depends heavily on digital services, outsourcing, and technology-enabled businesses flourishing across Nigerian states.

Enugu's investment extends beyond the new AI institute. The state is already building Smart Green Schools equipped with robotics and AI laboratories, preparing students for a tech-driven future from elementary school onward.
