Nigeria's First Female Neurosurgeon Leads US Children's Clinic

A pioneering Nigerian neurosurgeon who shattered glass ceilings in one of medicine's most male-dominated fields is now leading a children's hospital in the United States.

Dr. Salamat Ahuoiza Aliu-Ibrahim took the helm as Medical Director of Freeman Children's Clinic in Joplin, Missouri, on July 21, 2026. She made history years earlier as West Africa's first female certified neurosurgeon and Nigeria's first indigenous-trained female neurosurgeon.

Born in Ilorin in 1980, Aliu-Ibrahim studied medicine at the University of Ilorin before specializing in neurosurgery. She completed her neurosurgery residency at the National Hospital in Abuja, becoming a trailblazer in a specialty where women were virtually absent.

Her career flourished at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, where she served as Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon. There, she performed complex brain and spinal surgeries while inspiring the next generation of medical professionals.

Aliu-Ibrahim didn't stop at breaking one barrier. She pursued additional training internationally, completing pediatric residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch and a prestigious fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital, affiliated with Harvard Medical School.
