Nigeria's Ogazi, 20, Wins First-Ever 400m Gold at Games

A 20-year-old sprinter just rewrote Nigerian sports history and announced himself as the next great track star to watch.

Samuel Ogazi powered to victory in the men's 400m at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Saturday, giving Nigeria its first-ever gold medal in the event. The world number one finished in 44.25 seconds at Scotstoun Stadium, crossing the line more than half a second ahead of defending champion Jereem Richards of Trinidad and Tobago.

The win marks a major milestone for Nigerian track and field. The country's previous best in the event was a bronze medal earned by Sunday Bada back in 1994, making Ogazi's golden moment 32 years in the making.

Despite arriving as a favorite, Ogazi kept his nerves in check. "I would not say I had extra pressure on me," he said after the race. "I was confident, I came here prepared, I have trained for this."

The young sprinter's path to glory wasn't perfect. He admitted his first 100 meters felt sluggish, but he trusted his training and let his speed do the talking in the home stretch.

That kind of ambition from a 20-year-old might sound bold, but Ogazi has already proven he belongs on the world stage. He made the Olympic final at Paris 2024 as an 18-year-old and currently ranks as the fourth-fastest man of all time over 400 meters.

His former coach at the University of Alabama, Blaine Wiley, believes the sky truly is the limit. "Samuel is a remarkable athlete," Wiley said. "He has grown and matured every year from a boy into a man."

Nigeria now has a new champion to rally behind, one who's already delivered history and promises there's much more to come.
