Nigeria's Ogun State Opens First Gateway Airport

A new airport just opened in Nigeria that's about more than just planes taking off and landing.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu traveled to Ogun State on Saturday to commission the Gateway International Airport in Iperu, a sprawling project aimed at positioning the region as a major aviation and logistics center. The airport launch included the debut of Gateway Air, the state's new airline operating in partnership with ValueJet, complete with two newly acquired aircraft ready for service.

But the airport opening was just the beginning. The president also commissioned 1,000 electric bikes as part of the state's clean mobility initiative, giving residents an affordable and eco-friendly transportation option. Eighty new security vehicles rolled out to strengthen safety across the region, while a fleet of agricultural tractors was handed over to boost local food production.

The day included the opening of the Ilishan-Iperu Airport Road, connecting the new aviation hub to surrounding communities. President Tinubu also inspected the Nigeria Customs Service Village and commissioned a Forward Operating Base building, strengthening border security and making trade easier for local businesses.

One of the most symbolic moments came when the president commissioned the reconstructed Old Ibadan Road, now officially renamed the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Expressway. The arterial route promises to dramatically improve connectivity and commerce throughout the region.

The visit wrapped with an inspection of the Sagamu-Benin Concrete Road, a federal infrastructure project designed to ease transportation along one of Nigeria's busiest corridors.

The Ripple Effect

These projects represent more than concrete and steel. For farmers, the new tractors mean better harvests and easier work. For commuters, electric bikes offer clean, affordable transportation. For businesses, improved roads and a new airport open up markets that were previously hard to reach.

The Gateway Aviation Village, also commissioned during the visit, will support the growing aviation ecosystem with jobs in logistics, maintenance, and cargo operations. SAHCOL demonstrated cargo operations at the airport, signaling that freight and logistics activities are ready to begin immediately.

Governor Dapo Abiodun's administration worked closely with federal partners to bring these transformative initiatives to life. The collaboration shows what's possible when different levels of government align their visions for sustainable development.

Ogun State just took a major leap toward becoming one of Nigeria's most connected and economically vibrant regions.
