Nintendo Switch 2 Gets User-Replaceable Batteries in EU

Gaming just got a little more sustainable, and it's happening because Europe asked for it.

Nintendo plans to launch a revised Switch 2 in the European Union that allows users to replace their own batteries, according to Nikkei. The current Switch 2 model has a glued-in battery that requires professional service to swap out.

The change comes in response to EU regulations taking effect in February 2027. These new rules require devices with portable batteries to let users easily replace them without special tools or expertise.

The updated console launches soon in Europe, and both the main unit and the Joy-Con controllers will feature user-replaceable batteries. Japan will keep the original specifications for now, and Nintendo hasn't confirmed whether other regions will get the easier-to-repair version.

This wouldn't be the first time a company released a more repairable product exclusively in Europe. FujiFilm's Instax Mini Link 3 camera has a user-replaceable battery, but only in European markets.

This quiet hardware revision could signal something bigger for gaming. Console generations now stretch for nearly a decade, meaning a Switch you buy today might still be your go-to device in 2035.

When batteries fail after years of use, players currently face expensive repairs or full replacements. A simple battery swap could extend a console's life by years, keeping perfectly good hardware out of landfills.

Phone makers have already started responding to right-to-repair movements with more repairable designs. Now gaming hardware might follow the same path, giving players real ownership of devices they've invested hundreds of dollars in.
