Nissan Delivers 100,000th Electric Car in UK

Ron and Gillian Ainsworth walked into a Chorley, Lancashire dealership to pick up their first electric car and walked out as part of automotive history.

The couple became the recipients of Nissan's 100,000th electric vehicle delivered in the United Kingdom, a milestone 15 years in the making. They had no idea their new all-electric MICRA would be the one to hit this landmark number.

"We chose it for the comfort, space, and design," the Ainsworths shared about their decision to go electric for the first time. Like many drivers facing higher fuel prices, they saw an opportunity to cut running costs while trying something new.

Nissan's electric journey in Britain started back in 2011 with the original LEAF, the world's first mass-produced electric car designed for everyday drivers. That groundbreaking model introduced thousands of UK motorists to battery-powered driving when most automakers were still skeptical about electric vehicles.

Fast forward to today, and Nissan's electric lineup has grown from that single pioneering model to a full family of zero-emission vehicles. Buyers can now choose from the compact MICRA, the premium ARIYA SUV with over 300 miles of range, and the award-winning third-generation LEAF built right in Sunderland.

The new MICRA has been particularly popular since arriving in showrooms earlier this year. Its blend of city-friendly size, modern style, and practical range has attracted both curious first-time EV buyers and experienced electric car owners ready for an upgrade.

The Ripple Effect

Nissan's 100,000 vehicle milestone represents more than just sales numbers. It reflects a complete shift in how British drivers think about transportation, proving that electric cars have moved from niche curiosity to mainstream choice.

The company isn't slowing down either. Plans are already underway for a fully electric JUKE to roll off the Sunderland production line alongside the LEAF. An even smaller urban-focused electric model is also in development.

All three of Nissan's current passenger EVs qualify for the UK Government Electric Car Grant, making the switch more affordable for families like the Ainsworths. Combined with lower running costs and expanding charging networks, the barriers that once kept drivers from going electric continue to fall.
