NIU Tennis Clinches Championship Berth in Thriller
Northern Illinois men's tennis team rallied from a 3-1 deficit to defeat Western Michigan 4-3, earning their first MAC Championship appearance since 2019. Sophomore Pratyaksh LNU sealed the comeback with a dramatic three-set victory as teammates cheered courtside.
The Northern Illinois men's tennis team kept believing when everything pointed toward defeat, and that faith delivered them to their biggest moment in five years.
The Huskies stormed back from a 3-1 deficit Saturday to beat Western Michigan 4-3 in Buffalo, earning a spot in the Mid-American Conference Championship for the first time since 2019. Sophomore Pratyaksh LNU clinched the comeback in a final-court thriller at No. 6 singles, winning 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 over Jack Davison.
The odds looked grim early. NIU dropped the doubles point and watched Western Michigan jump to a 3-1 lead in singles competition. The Broncos came in riding seven straight wins and had just claimed their 30th regular season MAC title.
But Nikola Puntaric ignited the rally with a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles. Lorenzo Leti Messina followed by erasing a first-set loss to storm back 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 and tie the match at 3-3.
That left everything on Pratyaksh's shoulders. He'd already lost the first set and faced elimination in the second before winning a crucial tiebreaker. The sophomore then dominated the final set 6-1 to send his team to Sunday's championship match against host Buffalo.
"The atmosphere when Lorenzo's match finished and it was 3-3, everyone was there on my court, everyone on each team is shouting," Pratyaksh said. "To be part of that is just out of this world."
Head coach René Vidal praised his team's resilience. "We were outplayed for the first two hours of the match, but the guys stayed positive and bounced back," he said.
Why This Inspires
Pratyaksh's journey to Saturday's heroics included an up-and-down season that tested his confidence. But he kept believing, and so did his teammates and coaches. When the biggest moment arrived, that belief paid off.
The victory marks NIU's first time defeating Western Michigan twice in one season. Now they'll compete for their first-ever MAC Tournament title Sunday at noon.
NIU faces one more challenge to complete their underdog story and claim the championship that's eluded them throughout program history.
