North Carolina Students Kick Off School Year Cleaning Beach

Students heading back to school this year have a chance to make their first classroom the beach itself.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is hosting its annual back-to-school beach cleanup on Saturday, August 22, at Ocean Front Park in Kure Beach. The two-hour event runs from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and welcomes students of all ages, from toddlers to college students.

Participants are encouraged to wear their school colors and show off their spirit. The volunteer with the most school pride takes home a special green prize.

"These beach cleanups are a great way to begin the school year by keeping the health of our ocean top of mind," said Laine Cafferty, assistant events coordinator at the aquarium. "We hope that by starting the school year with a green mindset, all of us working together can make a difference in protecting species and ecosystems."

The aquarium is making it easy for families to participate sustainably. Free parking will be provided by the town, and the aquarium supplies reusable gloves, trash pickers, and bags for all volunteers.

Both organizers are walking the walk when it comes to environmental responsibility. They're asking participants to leave single-use items like water bottles, plastic bags, and coffee cups at home.

This event does more than just clean one stretch of coastline. By combining education with action, the aquarium is helping shape how the next generation thinks about environmental stewardship from day one of the school year.
