This means more natural gas can be extracted from the N05-A field using the same wind-powered infrastructure, maximizing what's already there instead of building new platforms.

The project brings together Smulders HSM for platform construction, SPIE for mechanical and electrical work, and Scaldis for offshore installation. By working as a unified team rather than separate contractors, they're streamlining the entire process from engineering through final installation.

The N05-A platform sits in a border area between the Netherlands and Germany called the Gateway to the Ems, where several small gas fields together hold an estimated 50 billion cubic meters of natural gas. The project shows how existing energy sources can transition toward cleaner operations during the shift to fully renewable systems. Natural gas will remain part of Europe's energy mix for the foreseeable future, so producing it with minimal emissions makes a real difference right now.

The platform's success wasn't easy. It faced years of regulatory hurdles and even a court-ordered temporary shutdown from climate activists before a provisional ruling allowed operations to continue. But the operator persisted in proving the concept could work.

SPIE's Marthijn van Dessel highlighted why the partnership matters: "We know the platform, we know each other, and we deliver everything as a single integrated package." That efficiency translates to better quality, more reliable timelines, and predictable project delivery.

The wind-powered approach is already earning recognition, with the project recently receiving a top methane rating for emissions performance. It's demonstrating that innovation and existing infrastructure can combine to cut emissions dramatically while still meeting energy demands.
