Norway Grants $487K for Ukraine's Largest Wind Farm

A wind farm powerful enough to serve hundreds of thousands of homes is coming to central Ukraine, thanks to a partnership that proves clean energy dreams can survive even the toughest times.

Ukrainian energy company DTEK Renewables secured a $487,000 grant from Norway's development agency Norad to launch pre-construction work on the Poltava wind farm. The facility will generate 650 megawatts of power when it becomes fully operational in 2028, making it the largest wind farm in the country.

The Norwegian funding will cover critical geological surveys and engineering studies through 2026. These preparatory steps ensure the project meets international environmental and technical standards before construction begins.

DTEK CEO Oleksandr Selishchev called the grant a recognition of Ukraine's commitment to energy independence and clean power. The timing matters deeply for a nation rebuilding its energy infrastructure while working toward European integration.

The Ripple Effect

This project reaches far beyond clean electricity. The wind farm will create new jobs in the Poltava region and strengthen local infrastructure during a period of national reconstruction.

By generating power close to where people live and work, the facility helps decentralize Ukraine's energy grid. That makes the entire system more resilient and harder to disrupt, a crucial advantage for any country facing external challenges.

The Norwegian support comes from a larger €8 million package aimed at developing renewable energy and critical infrastructure across Ukraine. With the World Bank estimating the country needs $91 billion to rebuild its energy sector, every partnership and grant helps stabilize the system.

The wind farm aligns with DTEK's long-term vision of achieving carbon neutrality and positioning Ukraine as a European energy hub. Once operational, it will significantly reduce strain on traditional thermal power plants while delivering clean electricity to countless households.
