Norwegian Cyclist Wins First World Tour Race in Solo Breakaway

A cyclist who'd never won a major race just pulled off one of the most remarkable victories in women's cycling.

Sigrid Haugset of Norway broke away from the pack 113 kilometers from the finish line during stage three of the Tour de France Femmes on Monday. She rode solo through the Jura mountains and into France, holding off Belgium's two-time world champion Lotte Kopecky to win by over a minute.

The 27-year-old had only won one race before: her national championship in June. Going into the stage, nobody expected her to challenge cycling's biggest names.

But on a scorching day that began with a steep mountain climb, Haugset launched her daring escape between two major hills. Kopecky, one of the most decorated riders in the sport, chased hard and got within 15 seconds of catching her.

Then the crosswinds picked up across the open fields, and Haugset found something extra. Kopecky fell back 30 seconds and eventually had to concede defeat.

"I never thought it was possible," Haugset said after crossing the finish line in Poligny. "When I went I thought: 'Yeah, she'll catch me. Should I drop down to her? Second is good.'"

Instead, she kept pushing. Her team car encouraged her over the radio, and she thought about everyone cheering from home in Norway. "I can't believe she didn't catch me," she said.

The effort left her completely spent. "I was so dizzy at the end. I couldn't lift my arms off the bike," she said, though she recovered in time to celebrate on the podium wearing Norway's national champion jersey.

Haugset's victory caps a magical summer for Norwegian sports. Their women's football team reached the World Cup quarterfinals, and Torstein Traeen wore the yellow jersey at the men's Tour de France for two stages.

Her win shows that believing in yourself, even when logic says otherwise, can lead to extraordinary moments. She now leads the overall race by over two minutes, though the mountain stages ahead will test whether she can hold on.
