Nova Scotia Home Floats Above Valley on Steel Legs

Imagine a house that doesn't fight the land but dances with it, suspended gracefully above a rocky valley like a bridge between two hills.

That's exactly what Omar Gandhi Architects created for a Montreal couple seeking a peaceful retreat on Nova Scotia's rugged Atlantic shoreline. The East River Residence appears to float above the landscape, held aloft by thin steel columns that let the terrain flow underneath like water.

The home stretches across a valley nestled in dense forest along rocky embankments. Rather than bulldozing or flattening the challenging site, the architects chose to hover above it, creating shaded nooks beneath the structure while preserving the natural landscape.

The roof design mirrors the land's natural rhythm, rising over rocks and dipping to create cozy spaces inside. In the living areas, it lowers to flood rooms with natural light. In the yoga studio, it lifts high to frame sweeping ocean views.

Large windows and doors blur the line between inside and outside, pulling the coastal landscape deep into the home. Covered outdoor terraces lead to a timber pathway and dock that extends toward the Atlantic, offering full views of the ocean tides.

The materials help the home blend seamlessly into its surroundings. Smooth gray metal cladding on the roof matches the rocky coastline, while cedar wood on the lower volume adds warmth.

Why This Inspires

This project shows that respecting nature and embracing challenges can lead to more beautiful solutions than forcing our will on the land. Instead of conquering the difficult terrain, the architects worked with it, creating a home that feels like a natural part of the landscape.
