Nova Scotia Launches 350 MW Clean Energy Procurement Round

Nova Scotia is making a major leap toward clean energy with a new competition that will bring 350 megawatts of renewable power to the province.

The Green Choice Program launched its second procurement round on September 10, inviting developers to build wind and solar projects that will generate 1,200 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually. That's enough to power roughly 10% of the province's total electricity demand.

This initiative lets large organizations like hospitals, universities, and major businesses access locally generated renewable electricity. Selected developers will sign 25-year contracts with Nova Scotia Power, the province's main utility, giving communities stable, predictable clean energy for decades.

The competition stays open until January 2027, with winning projects announced in May 2027. Developers will compete on price, experience, environmental impact, community engagement, and economic benefits they bring to Nova Scotia.

The first round in 2023 selected two wind projects totaling 262 megawatts, expected to start spinning by late 2028. Those projects locked in competitive prices between $45 and $66 per megawatt-hour, proving clean energy can be affordable.

Nova Scotia retained Power Advisory LLC to independently manage the selection process. The company's managing director previously oversaw more than $25 billion in renewable energy investments in Ontario, bringing serious expertise to ensure fair evaluation.

The Ripple Effect

This procurement is one piece of Nova Scotia's ambitious Clean Power Plan, which targets 80% renewable electricity and complete coal elimination by 2030. The province plans to add nearly 2,000 megawatts of combined wind, solar, and battery storage capacity this decade.

Eddie Oldfield from the Canadian Renewable Energy Association says the procurement strengthens Nova Scotia's position as a renewable energy leader. Each new project creates construction jobs, manufacturing opportunities, and long-term maintenance careers across the province.

The shift away from coal means cleaner air for communities that have lived near power plants for generations. Families breathe easier knowing their electricity comes from wind and sun instead of fossil fuels.
