NSW Bottle Return Scheme Raises $100M for Charities

😊 Feel Good

A simple act of returning bottles and cans has generated over $100 million for Australian charities since 2017. The program has also recycled 16 billion containers while putting $1.6 billion back in people's pockets.

Returning empty bottles and cans just became one of the easiest ways to support causes you care about, and Australians have turned it into a $100 million movement.

Since launching in December 2017, New South Wales' Return and Earn program has hit two remarkable milestones. The scheme has processed 16 billion bottles, cans, and cartons through local drop-off points while delivering $1.6 billion in refunds to residents across the state.

But the real surprise? Over $100 million of those refunds went straight to charities and community groups instead of back into pockets.

The program works simply. Residents bring eligible containers to one of 660 return points across NSW and choose whether to keep their 10-cent-per-container refund or donate it directly to a registered charity through the app. More than 600 charities and community groups are now listed as donation partners.

Danielle Smalley, CEO of scheme coordinator Exchange for Change, says the community response exceeded all expectations. "Donating eligible bottles, cans and cartons allows anyone to support their favourite cause without putting their hand in their pocket for a cash donation," she explained.

The donations are making real differences. The Jeans for Genes appeal raised $210,000 for the Children's Medical Research Institute in just one year. Guide Dogs NSW/ACT received $175,000 to support people living with blindness and low vision.

Even local causes are thriving. The Port Stephens Koala Hospital collected over $23,000 from 230,000 donated containers, enough to purchase vital equipment including an x-ray dental plate and specialized tools for diagnosing eye injuries in koalas.

The current statewide partner is The Smith Family, a children's education charity aiming to raise $200,000. Just 30 donated containers can fund one book for a disadvantaged student.

The Ripple Effect

This program proves that small actions create waves of change. Every container returned keeps plastic and aluminum in circulation rather than in landfills or oceans. Every donation supports causes from animal welfare to medical research to helping sick children.

James Dorney, CEO of network operator TOMRA Cleanaway, calls it "the circular economy in action." The scheme creates cleaner environments while delivering financial benefits to individuals, charities, schools, and sporting groups simultaneously.

Sixteen billion containers represent more than recycling. They represent 16 billion moments when someone chose to do something good for the planet and their community at the same time.
