NYC Adds 600+ Curbside EV Chargers in 10 Neighborhoods

New York City just made going electric a lot easier for thousands of drivers who don't have their own parking spaces.

Brooklyn-based company it's electric will install more than 600 new curbside EV charging points across NYC neighborhoods, expanding the current network from just 88 chargers to 700. The transportation department announced Tuesday that the three-year, $60 million project targets areas with high concentrations of taxi and rideshare drivers who need public charging options.

Washington Heights, Forest Hills, and the Upper West Side are among the more than 10 neighborhoods getting the new charging stations. Each station will feature at least two posts with multiple charging points, designed specifically for New York's unique street layout.

"Just as fire hydrants are on every street, our vision is for EV chargers to become that normal," said Nathan King, CEO of it's electric. The company designed the chargers specifically for Brooklyn, and they're being manufactured right in Queens by Boyce Technologies.

The timing couldn't be better for the city's climate goals. NYC is working toward net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and this charging network makes that target more achievable for everyday New Yorkers. For taxi and rideshare drivers especially, switching to electric vehicles has been challenging without convenient charging options.

The new chargers will even include connections for e-bikes and other micromobility devices, creating charging hubs that serve multiple transportation needs. The city opened an online portal through September 30 for residents to suggest additional locations they'd like to see chargers installed.

The Ripple Effect

This project does more than just add charging stations. It's creating a blueprint for how cities can support the electric vehicle transition without requiring everyone to own a garage or driveway.

The locally designed and manufactured chargers mean jobs staying in New York, with Brooklyn innovation meeting Queens manufacturing. For the thousands of professional drivers who spend their days navigating city streets, reliable curbside charging removes a major barrier to going electric.

As more chargers appear on neighborhood blocks, they'll normalize electric vehicles for a generation of kids who will grow up seeing them as standard street infrastructure.

New York is showing other dense cities that the electric future doesn't require suburban-style charging setups—it just requires smart use of the space we already have.
