NYC Kids Bike to 41 Playgrounds in One Day for World Record

Two third-graders just proved that breaking a world record is possible when you've got a bike, a best friend, and a really good map of Manhattan playgrounds.

Hannah and Wilder, both 8, visited 41 playgrounds across New York City in one day last Friday, beating an Australian record of 26 playgrounds set in 2019. The Upper West Side friends biked from spot to spot with their parents, stopping at favorites like River Run Playground on Riverside Drive and Erie Canal Playground on West 52nd Street.

The ambitious idea came from Hannah, who recruited her kindergarten buddy Wilder for the challenge. "I've always wanted to break a world record," Wilder said, admitting he was shocked but excited when Hannah first pitched the plan.

The two families created an online tracker to map their progress throughout the day. They discovered something many New Yorkers overlook: their city is packed with community play spaces where families can gather outdoors.

"We're so lucky to live in New York City," said Hannah's mom, Jesenia Ruiz De La Torre. "A lot of people don't realize it, but there are so many playgrounds here and community spaces where people can be together outside."

The playground adventure carried extra meaning for the two friends. Wilder's family is moving outside the United States this year, making this summer their last chance to explore the city together before saying goodbye.
