New York City and state officials announced this week they're studying America's first thermal energy network in a transit system. The project would capture excess heat from the Chambers Street and Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall subway stations and redirect it to warm nearby government buildings in winter.
The technology works through a system of water pipes and heat pumps that transfer otherwise wasted thermal energy. Heat collected during sweltering summer months would be stored in underground geothermal boreholes until needed for heating.
"Anyone who has stood on a subway platform in August knows that our stations do not just get hot, they turn into underground saunas," Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at Monday's announcement. The $800,000 feasibility study will determine exactly how much platform cooling could be achieved and how much the city could save on energy costs.
If the study shows promise, design work would begin in early 2027. The project would launch as part of a major renovation of Chambers Street station, one of the oldest in the subway system, funded by congestion pricing proceeds.

The Ripple Effect
This could be a game changer for cities across America. Metropolitan Transit Authority CEO Janno Lieber noted that thermal energy networks already work successfully at locations like St. Patrick's Cathedral and the New York Botanical Garden.
Creating a proven methodology for subway systems means other major cities could follow suit. Boston is already studying whether it can tap thermal energy from its waterways, data centers, transit system, and wastewater treatment facilities.
"It's wonderful that cities like New York and Boston are looking at what really has been this massive untapped energy resource of ambient waste heat," said Johanna Partin of Transformative Strategies Consulting. She's working with Boston on similar projects.
The potential extends to any city with underground transit. Millions of commuters suffer through underground heat every summer while buildings burn fossil fuels for winter warmth just blocks away.
Governor Kathy Hochul called it an example of what effective city-state partnership can achieve. MTA Chair Lieber added it could be "a real win-win: cooler stations for our subway riders, and the city of New York gets to save on energy costs."
