Oakville Charity Sends $1.4M in Medical Aid to Lebanon

When Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health sent an unprecedented emergency letter to a small Canadian charity, they warned that their healthcare system might not survive without immediate help.

Health Partners International Canada (HPIC), headquartered in Oakville, answered that call. The organization just delivered 134,000 medical supplies valued at $1.4 million to Beirut, bringing desperately needed medicine to a country in crisis.

"Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health sent an unprecedented letter to HPIC earlier this year, describing an urgent situation," said Lois Brown, President of HPIC. The message was clear: without external assistance, the health sector would collapse.

The 4.6 metric tonnes of supplies included medicines for infections and wounds, treatments for chronic conditions, and medications patients depend on daily. Canadian pharmaceutical partners donated vital medicines while individuals and community groups raised funds to ship the supplies safely.

The medical aid couldn't come at a more critical time. Ongoing conflict has left hospitals under severe pressure, with damaged facilities and supply shortages limiting access to care. Approximately 1.3 million people are displaced within Lebanon, including nearly 370,000 children, creating even greater healthcare demands.

The supplies are now being distributed by HPIC's partners on the ground: Anera, Islamic Relief, and Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health. These organizations are getting the medicine to healthcare facilities that need it most.

The Ripple Effect

This delivery is just the beginning. HPIC is already preparing the next wave of shipments, valued at over $1 million, set to depart from their Oakville distribution centre in the coming days.

The charity's model makes every donation count in a powerful way. For every $10 contributed, HPIC can deliver $100 worth of medicine to those who need it. The organization is currently working toward a $200,000 goal to cover operations for Lebanon relief efforts.

Brown praised the response from Canadian partners and supporters. "Our Canadian partner's response has been extraordinary," she said, thanking both the companies providing donated medicine and the transportation workers who ensured safe delivery.

Individual supporters can still contribute to the ongoing relief efforts, helping HPIC maintain the supply chain of critical medical aid to Lebanon's healthcare system.
