Oaxaca Invests $40M in Police Safety and Salaries

Oaxaca is putting its money where its values are with a $40 million investment in public safety that prioritizes both equipment and the people who serve.

The southern Mexican state announced the unprecedented 2026 budget will fund 65 new patrol vehicles, over 2,000 surveillance cameras, updated firearms, and cutting-edge technology including drones and forensic lab equipment. But the real story is what's happening for the officers themselves.

Police across Oaxaca will receive a 17.24% salary increase this year. Karina Barón Ortiz, who leads the state's Public Security System, called it "an act of justice and dignity" that recognizes the families depending on every officer's paycheck.

"Behind every uniform there is a home, daughters and sons who go to school, as well as hopes and dreams," Barón explained. The philosophy is simple: well-paid, valued officers become incorruptible officers committed to protecting their communities.

Governor Salomon Jara Cruz said the investment makes Oaxaca's citizen protection budget one of Mexico's largest for the third consecutive year. The funding combines $18.36 million from federal sources with $23.52 million from state coffers.

The comprehensive package includes 8,025 new uniforms, tactical gear, ballistic shields, and high-end communication radios. Officers will have modern tools to do their jobs safely while earning wages that reflect the risks they take.
