When a man climbed over the railing of the Kingston Rhinecliff Bridge last Friday night, strangers and first responders united to pull off a remarkable rescue that ended with everyone safe.

Ulster 911 received the emergency call just before 10 p.m. Officers from three different agencies rushed to the scene, where the man had climbed over the railing and was physically resisting help.

The situation became critical when he dropped into a hanging position from the concrete barrier. Officers immediately grabbed onto him while a sheriff's deputy worked to secure him with a rope.

Then something remarkable happened. People in the area sprang into action, bringing rope, a bucket truck, and other equipment to help with the rescue. These everyday heroes didn't hesitate to offer what they had.

The breakthrough came when a Spanish-speaking deputy was able to connect with the man in his native language. With the deputy's encouragement and the officers' assistance, the man agreed to climb back over the railing to safety.

"This incident ultimately had a positive and successful outcome due to the heroic efforts of all officers, troopers, deputies and civilians who seamlessly assisted in the rescue efforts," the Ulster Police Department said.
