Offshore Wind Farm Powers 350,000 Homes Despite Setbacks

After years of legal battles and federal opposition, the Revolution Wind offshore farm just started pumping clean electricity into the New England grid.

The 704-megawatt project sits 15 nautical miles off Rhode Island's coast and will power 350,000 homes when it reaches full operation later this year. Connecticut officials say it will meet 5% of the state's total energy demand.

The timing couldn't be better for families facing sky-high winter heating bills. State officials estimate the wind farm will save ratepayers up to $500 million every year by reducing dependence on volatile fossil fuel markets.

"As we've seen from the harsh winter we've had, and the impacts to fossil fuel prices as a result of the Iran war, having diverse sources of stable, reliable power is beneficial to ratepayers," said Katie Dykes, Connecticut's Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner. The project generates especially strong power during winter months when energy demand peaks.

Revolution Wind faced repeated shutdown attempts from the Trump administration, but a January court decision cleared the final legal hurdle. State governors from Connecticut, Rhode Island, and neighboring states fought to keep the project alive, demanding classified briefings and taking the federal government to court.

Danish energy company Ørsted began building the massive turbines in 2023, with the first one completed last September. Connecticut workers helped construct the project, which created hundreds of jobs in coastal communities like New London.

Beyond lower utility bills, the wind farm demonstrates how renewable energy can shield families from global instability. Unlike natural gas and oil, offshore wind prices don't spike when international conflicts disrupt fuel supplies.

The project also marks a turning point for clean energy infrastructure in the Northeast. Senator Richard Blumenthal called it "a new era for energy in Connecticut," noting that the turbines will generate power for decades without depending on fossil fuels.

Governor Ned Lamont congratulated the workers who built the project, emphasizing its role in "diversifying our energy supply and lowering utility costs for families and businesses." The wind farm proves that clean energy and economic savings can go hand in hand.
