"Wind generation is materially stronger at night and much, much stronger in the winter, so this creates this really fantastic synergy with the resources that we already have on the grid now," Stover says. It's like having a backup dancer who knows all the moves when the lead needs a break.

Developers are already building offshore wind farms near New England, New York, and Virginia. These coastal areas face some of the fastest growing energy demands in the country, making them perfect testing grounds for this technology.
