Ohio Bluecoats Score 99 to Win Third Drum Corps World Title

The Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps from Stark County, Ohio just achieved what most marching ensembles can only dream of: a perfect season crowned with a world championship.

On August 8, the group delivered a jaw-dropping performance at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, scoring 99.100 at the Drum Corps International World Championships. That score represents only the fifth time in DCI's 54-year history that any corps has broken the 99 barrier.

The victory capped an undefeated season where the Bluecoats placed first in every single competition, from Akron to California. They dominated their rivals at the championship, finishing nearly two points ahead of second-place Blue Devils and becoming only the fifth drum corps ever to win three or more gold medals.

"It's just surreal," said drum major Jason Zheng moments after the win. "After the awards were announced, I just had to stand here and take it all in."

The Bluecoats didn't just win the top prize. They swept four major caption awards, including their first-ever George Zingali Best Color Guard Award, along with honors for general effect, visual performance, and percussion performance.

The Ripple Effect

This victory represents more than one spectacular night. The Bluecoats have placed in the top three in all but one of the last 11 seasons, building a culture of excellence that spans more than a decade.

Their three championships came in 2016, 2024, and now 2026, with a second-place finish in 2025. That consistency required years of dedicated practice, strategic planning, and unwavering commitment from performers and staff alike.

"This is something we've been working for for a long time, not just this season, but over time, to be a consistent contender," said CFO/COO Genevieve Geisler. The organization's investment in building sustainable excellence is now paying dividends that inspire young musicians across the region.

This summer also marked the Bluecoats' first tour of California and Western states since 2009, expanding their reach and introducing new audiences to world-class drum corps performance. Young performers in those communities now have fresh proof that dedication and artistry can achieve the extraordinary.

Hundreds of hours of rehearsal, countless bus rides, and unwavering teamwork just proved that perfection is possible when talent meets determination.
