Ohio Schools See Real Progress on Latest Report Cards

School districts across Licking County, Ohio are celebrating real improvements in student achievement, with several schools climbing to higher ratings on their latest state report cards.

The Ohio Department of Education grades all districts on a five-star scale each year. This year brought good news: Granville Exempted Village maintained its perfect five-star rating, while Licking Heights jumped from four to 4.5 stars. Four other districts held strong at four stars, and two more climbed up from 3.5 stars.

Granville, the county's only five-star district, earned top marks in achievement, progress, gap closing, and graduation. Superintendent Jeff Brown credits the success to a focus beyond just test scores. "Our mission is learning for life, so it's not just about academic achievement," he said.

The district prioritizes what they call "human skills" alongside academics, creating an environment where students can explore their interests while mastering content. Brown says administrators and teachers maintain a continuous improvement mindset, always looking for ways to help students thrive.

Heath City Schools came close to jumping up to 4.5 stars. Superintendent Trevor Thomas pointed to particularly strong gains in student achievement, where the district's performance index has climbed every year for five straight years. "Our students continue to achieve at a higher level every year," he said.

Heath's graduation rates also stood out. The high school has excelled at getting every student across the finish line, Thomas noted. Their progress scores, which measure how effectively teachers help students grow, have remained solid year after year.

Johnstown-Monroe and Lakewood districts both improved from 3.5 to 4 stars, showing measurable gains for their communities.

These improvements represent more than numbers on a report card. They show teachers connecting with students, schools refining their approaches, and entire communities working together to help young people succeed.

The gains also reflect how schools are balancing traditional academics with preparing students for real life after graduation, whether that means college, careers, military service, or the workforce. When districts prioritize both knowledge and life skills, students benefit in ways that extend far beyond the classroom.
