Police sergeant holding small rescued kittens near roadway in Wellston Ohio

Ohio Sergeant Saves Kittens Despite Not Liking Cats

A Jackson County sergeant who admits he "doesn't really care for cats" stopped traffic to rescue three kittens stranded on a busy road, then reunited them with their mother. His simple act proves that kindness doesn't require loving what you're saving.

When Sgt. Jesse Reynolds spotted three tiny kittens wandering into traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue in Wellston, Ohio, he didn't hesitate despite his personal feelings about felines. "I've had a bad experience with cats in my life," he admitted, but that didn't stop him from jumping into action.

Reynolds and Lt. Rick Zinn were on routine detective work when they encountered stopped traffic near the Wellston City Schools Bus Garage. The small, disoriented kittens were in immediate danger as vehicles passed nearby.

Zinn activated the cruiser's emergency lights while Reynolds quickly exited and moved to protect the vulnerable animals. Within moments, he carefully secured all three kittens and carried them toward safety near the roadway's edge.

That's when Reynolds made a heartwarming discovery. Behind a piece of metal tin, the mother cat and several other kittens were sheltering together, separated from the trio that had wandered into danger.

Reynolds reunited the rescued kittens with their mother and siblings. "It appeared that the kittens got separated from their mother," he explained. "I just didn't want anybody to hit them."

Sunny's Take

For Reynolds, the decision was straightforward despite drawing attention he didn't seek. "We did turn the lights on and kind of make a scene, but I wasn't really trying to do that," he said.

His philosophy is simple and powerful. "My job on a daily basis is to protect. I couldn't keep driving. I just felt like I had to do something."

Reynolds joined the Jackson County Sheriff's Office in 2022 as a deputy, earned promotion to detective in 2024, and recently became sergeant in 2026. This wasn't even his first unusual animal rescue—in 2023, he helped wrangle an escaped emu named Dixie along Red Brush Road.

"People ought to be nice, and you've got to be kind," Reynolds said. "Sometimes you've got to be mean, but that wasn't one of those times."

His actions remind us that compassion transcends personal preferences, and the smallest lives are worth protecting too.
